Hear What Survivors Have to Say

Survivor M’s Testimony:

“I recently had the opportunity to participate in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Women’s Self-Defense course, in support of Take Back the Night Phoenix and Trauma Healing Services.

I was astonished, not only by the number of survivors that were present and ready to learn new skills in personal safety and self confidence, but also at the amazing, thoughtful demonstration presented by the Gracie staff.

They were so connected to the students and mindful of the sensitivity required while demonstrating triggering scenarioscreating emotional vulnerability.

I was truly impressed with the honest and open teachings and walked away feeling a new sense of self-awareness and confidence.

I own a handgun and was often not comfortable carrying it in fear that it would make me a target. After learning the few small maneuvers in the class, I feel much more confident in my ability to create a safe space between myself and any would-be attacker.”

Survivor CM’s Testimony:

“…knowing that there are lots of ways I can learn to protect myself gives me a sense of security within myself, boosting my confidence

At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Phoenix, I got a sense of empowerment after trying a couple moves and just observing others. I went back a couple more times and each time was more comfortable.”

Survivor K’s Testimony:

“I lived with fear as a constant companion since my abuser’s recent release from prison.

At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Phoenix, I learned I am mentally and physically stronger than I gave myself credit for. I have learned how to be a difficult target and how to defend myself if the need arises.

I have overcome fears and gained an extended family — people who have my back and stand by me as I continue to grow and heal.”
